I was shocked to find out that a second season of this dropped. i totally missed that amazing development, and decision to continue on with this odd little MArvel show. I went into Season 2, as a soft fan of the show, not necessarily foaming at the mouth, but excited. Measured, but excited. I remembered the general theme of the show, but I couldn’t remember a lot of specifics headed into Season 2.
Monkey is back, and he’s looking for revenge. He has the ghost (?) of Bryce (Jason Sudekis) following him around, and he takes up with an assassin organization accepting that this is his life, but also really wanting specific vengeance. Other season one characters reappear, including the detective, and also the young woman that Monkey felt a connection with, and that story is thrown into insanity over ten episodes. Lots more things that don’t exist in reality, other assassins with superpowers, and Bryce having to reconnect with his daughter he abandoned years ago.
I’ll admit, I struggled following the mechanics of this. At some points, people can’t see Bryce, but at other points they can? But, he also can interact with objects, even when not seen. It is a very odd set of rules he operates with.
What I Look for In The Audio Description: Technically, the lead doesn’t really talk. So, the primary and most important function is tracking Monkey. Other than that, even more than Bryce, there are all these new characters to describe, and creatures to fight. Since they didn’t exist in season 1, description here is my #2 priority. Then, Bryce and his ghost dynamic.I struggled with this. Lastly, the action of the show is pervasive, and bloody, so a track that supports that would be great.
What It Does: There’s this excellent sequence between Monkey and another animal in a crucial moment, which explains how they converse, and how Monky pulls off a shot that saves his life. That would be my choice to use as an example of what the strongest point was. As I do this stuff, I learn more and more which companies have the reputation, and which don’t, and some aren’t impressed by point 360. I think this is a good track. It is balanced well, the descriptions of the new characters were good, we got bloody action description. The only mechanic I had a hard time following could also just be chalked up to either the writing of the show, or maybe I blacked out for five crucial seconds. Who knows. But, Roy Samuelson is a fine choice here, and the description compliments the show.
Final Thoughts: If we keep this show up, I’m gonna want Monkey to join the Avengers. I know there are no plans, but, I would love to see a live action version of Hit Monkey on screen. He’s like Abu, if Abu could kill you.
Final Grade: A-
