Having already been championed by BBC 6 Music, Spotify and The Line of Best Fit (and us – if you haven’t listened to ‘Reborn‘ yet, do so after this track), Martha Hill’s star is rising and ‘Blindfold’ is another fine addition to the North East artist’s selection of ‘hard-hitting alt pop with a social conscience’.
Every song Martha releases says something about the world we live in – she also curates and promotes the Women Are Mint festival – and ‘Blindfold’ is no exception. Tackling a toxic relationship (‘it’s hard for me to feel dramatic, systematic when you please’), the grounded instrumentation contains elements of genres that could incorporate artists as diverse as Kate Tempest, The Streets to David Byrne and there’s a defiant tone running through as Martha says: ‘I’ve been here before. I know the score because I’m the one who wrote it and when you hear nothing from me, I hope that you both feel disappointed’; ‘Didn’t anybody tell you, didn’t anybody make you see that for once in a long time I get a chance to be free?’; ‘Life is longer than a summer lost, you’re just dust on a highway’.
Martha has also announced an extensive UK tour (see the dates in the poster above) for later in the year.
