Glasgow-based Irish singer-songwriter Claire McKay (better known as Martha Ffion) has shared the lyric video for new single ‘After the Fact’, the first song to be taken from her highly anticipated second album ‘Nights to Forget’. We were huge fans of 2018’s Scottish Album of the Year Award-nominated ‘Sunday Best’ and can’t wait to see what Claire comes up with next.
‘After the Fact’ was written a couple of summers ago when Claire was ‘questioning things I could have done differently in the wake of a difficult event’ and has a fractured pop sound with its deliberately paced, angular guitar parts and talk of memories, leaving the country and how ‘you’d do anything for an ordinary day’ when circumstances get strange. There’s a classic songwriting sound in the vein of Paul Simon grappling with the Caroline Polachek-style stutterings – and the results are glorious, although tinged – as all good songs are – with a touch of heartbreak: ‘I went to the movies alone to try and take my mind off you.
