boston may 17 2004. i post again these pictures taken with a hastily purchased disposable film camera on the day gay marriage became legal in the united states. i took them outside boston city hall as the first legally affianced gay couples in u s history, here and throughout the state, lined up to get their marriage licenses.
this week the supreme court strengthened the right of same sex couples to marry. it's impossible to overestimate the positive effect marriage equality has had on public perception of homosexuals. before equal standing of romantic commitment under the law, gays were perceived by many as eternal sexual predators moving from hookup to hookup, motivated only by carnal urges. now, growingly, gay couples are understood to be sympathetic loving people with the same challenges, joys and frustrations as straights. not deviance... love.
