Mariano’s Final Inning

Posted on the 18 September 2013 by Thetrophylife @TheTrophyLife

With the month of September dwindling to a close that signals the end of the 2013 Baseball regular season. The Yankees (79-72) trail the final Wild Card playoff spot by 3.5 games likely meaning they won’t be competing for their 27th championship, the most by any franchise in North American sports history. Yankees’ closer, Mariano Rivera has decided to hang it up at the conclusion of this season, ending his 18 year tenure with the Yankees and his all-time MLB record of 651 (and counting) saves. Recognized as the greatest closer of all-time seemingly unanimously amongst fans of the sport, Mariano will also be the last player to wear the #42, in honor of Jackie Robinson. In honor of the future-hall-of-famer opposing stadiums have celebrated his career in his final visit to each ballpark, and in his final month, Sports Illustrated has granted him Cover Athlete, for the 4th time. This month’s issue will be available for purchase Monday, September 23rd with an article titled “Exit Sandman” dedicated for Mariano.
