I'm no stranger to dining out, that's for sure, so I arranged a little surprise date night at Marco Pierre White in Newcastle, somewhere I'd never been before - and to my surprise my boyfriend hadn't been either.
We were welcomed in on a cold November evening and shown to our booth for the meal. Offered a cocktail list but we went straight for a bottle of red to compliment the steak. Our waiters for the evening were both friendly, giving us plenty of time to peruse the a la carte dishes and discuss whether we were going to order individual plates or share one of the larger cuts.
Visiting a steakhouse, we thought we had to try the beef really! That being said though, there's a good selection of other dishes, the burgers sound pretty good, plus chicken, belly pork and fish options on the menu too and some veggie choices too.
Our starters arrived and my boyfriend looked delighted by his Lobster Macaroni. Then I tasted it and I'm pretty sure my face lit up in the same way. It wouldn't have been out of place as a main dish, with generous amounts of lobster and creamy macaroni cheese. If I hadn't been tucking into a baked Camembert and crisp sourdough, I may have asked to swap starters. The Camembert was deliciously gooey, but as always pretty filling, so I did have to (unfortunately) leave some to make space for our Côte De Boeuf.
Whilst we both enjoyed sharing the Côte De Boeuf, we did agree some of the meat was a little fatty and not as tender as expected. I know this is down to the rib cut and there's no denying it was a good piece of Scottish beef and at 24oz, a very good size to share (and also the biggest they offer - for something a little smaller, there's the 16oz Chateaubriand). Peppercorn sauce was a lovely accompaniment, with a little French twist and the addition of the escargot in garlic and parsley butter sauce was nice to try - but maybe a little salty for my liking. Pomme Frites were great and perfectly seasoned and served in those copper pans - an absolute dream to photograph!
Everyone has room for dessert so we picked the New York Baked Cheesecake and Eton Mess - I stayed away from the cheese board as tempting as it was, remembering the Camembert I had for my starter.
Sipping the last of our wine, we looked around the restaurant. It was a busy Friday night with a mix of guests, couples perhaps out for a special occasion or celebrating an anniversary, families having a meal together and when a table emptied, new guests soon arrived to take their place.
Looking for somewhere special for a meal, or just wanting to try out something new? Why not give Marco Pierre White Steakhouse a go?
We were kindly given a complimentary dinner. All photos and words my own. Thanks for having us, MPW Newcastle!
