Happy end of March friends! I can't believe how quickly this month has flown by and now how excited I am to share about this month's book! So many of you have already been sharing how inspired you were by Becoming and so let's dive in to the book itself and my own thoughts!Synopsis: You've all hard of Michelle Obama but no one has heard of the story of the beginning of the first lady of the United States of America. The first African American to serve in that role, Michelle helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the United States and around the world. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Mrs. Obama invited us as her listeners into a world, chronicling the experiences that shaped her including her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. She describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her story as she lived it. It's a personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has defied expectations and whose story inspires us all to do the same.
My Thoughts: As I said before, I eagerly anticipated for this book because obviously I don't know the Obamas personally but felt as if I did as I was reading this book. Michelle shares a lot of personal stories including growing up in the lower middle class south short neighborhood of Chicago and her father being a boiler operator. Obama grew up in a staple household where her parents had high expectations clear, through family life had its challenges, especially her father's falling ill with multiple sclerosis. Still, she managed to get into Princeton, then Harvard Law and then work at the ultra prestigious Chicago law first of Sidley & Austin where she met Barack. In contrast, Michelle Obama made it clear in the book that she's the organizer,r path following one unlike her husband.
The second part of the novel, "Becoming Us", I loved hearing the struggles that Barack faces with his political ambition, becoming husband and wife and Michelle talks about even couples counseling. I appreciated her honesty of working through marriage together and having it's challenges as well as career challenges.
My favorite part of the book was the last third of the book "Becoming More" where Michelle talks about the stress but also the opportunity offer her vision being in the spotlight. At the end she still remains optimistic about whats to come for the future.
I found it fascinating how driven Michelle is and how she stops at nothing to beat the odds not only for herself but for her girls as well. It's a great eye opener into her life and I appreciate her being so open about her fears, her goals and her dreams.
