-- Many years ago I remember seeing a Donald Duck cartoon (Donald's Happy Birthday) in which Donald's nephews (Huey, Dewey, and Louie) were sitting in their playhouse trying to decide what to get Unca' Donald for his birthday. On the wall was a calendar showing the date: March 13th. Did you know Donald Duck has a middle name? His full name is Donald Fauntleroy Duck.

National EarMuff Day
- Celebrates a warm invention... the earmuff! People in cold climates can really appreciate this day. And, they are ever so thankful to the person who created the earmuff. Earmuffs keep your ears warm and protect you from ear infections and earaches resulting from icy cold wind and weather.
National Coconut Torte Day
- Today dessert lovers can make a batch of coconut torte at home and share with friends and family, or purchase a torte if a local source is available. But if you feeling lazy and cheap, go get some Hostess Sno-balls and pig out.
Planet Uranus Discovered (1781)
- The first planet discovered in modern times was discovered by William Herschel while systematically searching the sky with his telescope on March 13, 1781. It had actually been seen many times before but ignored as simply another star (the earliest recorded sighting was in 1690 when John Flamsteed cataloged it as 34 Tauri). Herschel named it the Georgium Sidus (the Georgian Planet) in honor of his patron, the infamous (to Americans) King George III of England; others called it Herschel. The name Uranus was first proposed by Bode in conformity with the other planetary names from classical mythology but didn't come into common use until 1850.
National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day
- It isn't always bad luck to open an umbrella inside. According to some, it's only considered bad if any of the following apply: The umbrella was a gift. The umbrella is black. The umbrella has never been used outdoors. There is a sick person in the house.
Ken Day (1961)
- Ken Carson, who debuted on March 13, 1961, has spent his lifetime toiling, desperately, to please Barbie. Ken's world has been one capitulation after another. Yet, Mattel's 12-inch, plastic boy toy stands firm in the Barbie universe.
L. Ron Hubbard Day (1911)
- Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (March 13, 1911 – January 24, 1986), better known as L. Ron Hubbard (and often referred to by his initials, LRH), was an American pulp fiction author and religious leader who founded the Church of Scientology. After establishing a career as a writer, becoming best known for his science fiction and fantasy stories, he developed a self-help system called Dianetics which was first published in 1950.
National Jewel Day
- Today is your chance to give or receive jewelry. Will you receive jewelry today? Who knows? But one thing we can be certain about... jewelry stores love this holiday. It does not need to be expensive or elaborate. Just a simple, inexpensive piece of jewelry will be in good keeping with this special day.
National Good Samaritan Day/Good Samaritan Involvement Day (1964)
- A day to emphasize the importance of unselfish aid to those who need it. Recognized on the anniversary of the killing of Catherine (Kitty) Genovese, March 13, 1964, in the Kew Gardens community, Queens, NY. Reportedly no fewer than 38 of her neighbors, not wanting to get involved, witnessed and watched for nearly 30 minutes as the fleeing girl was pursued and repeatedly stabbed by her 29-year-old attacker.
K-9 Veterans Day (1942)
- March 13, 1942, is the official birthday of the United States K9 Corps, and so it seems only right to annually honor their service on that date. They served to save, and they deserve to be remembered.
