Car Trouble Symptom
The transmission jumps out of third gear while you were driving your car. This problem indicates the following:
(1) Faulty shift linkage.
(2) Excessive input shaft movement.
Due to the complexity of a manual transmission, it is hard to explain to a non-mechanic exactly why either a problem with the shift linkage or something called the input shaft can cause the transmission to jump out of gear (high gears in this particular case).
Car Troubleshooting
We are assuming you're not a mechanic and therefore it would be pointless to provide any kind of detailed explanation. However, just know that both the shift linkage and the degree of input shaft play (i.e. movement) have a lot to do with the transmission staying in gear. Therefore, when the linkage is faulty (i.e. worn or just out of adjustment) or the input shaft movement is excessive, the transmission can pop out of gear. Incidentally, the diagnoses provided are only likely possibilities. There are, however, other possible causes that can only be determined by a professional.
Transmissions that jump out the 3rd gear is an indication of a problem of faulty shift linkage or excessive input shaft movement. It is very difficult to understand if you are not a mechanic why the faulty shift linkage or excessive input shaft movement can cause the transmission to jump out of 3rd gear because of the complexity of manual transmissions.
However, just understand that shift linkage and standard play of shaft input movement is causing the transmission to stay in gear. Therefore if the shift linkage is faulty or if there is an excessive input shaft movement it can cause the transmission to stay out of gear. The problem we indicated is just a possibility that is more likely the cause other causes can be determined by conducting an actual inspection on the transmission.
What to do?
If this vehicle is under warranty, extended warranty, or a service contract you'll be covered for any work necessary. Otherwise, you'll need to seek out a reputable shop that specializes in manual transmissions. Have the mechanic inspect and adjust the shift linkage. If that doesn't fix the problem then you'll likely be facing more costly work.
If your car is under warranty your car will be covered for any necessary work. Otherwise, find a reputable auto repair shop specialized in manual transmission. Ask the mechanic to inspect the shift linkage and adjust if necessary, also ask the mechanic to inspect the input shaft movement if within specifications. If after the adjustments, the problem of the transmission that jumps out of 3rd gear still occurs then expect a more costly repair.
