Manoir De Grandouet Cidre Fermier Brut

By I Think About Beer @ithinkaboutbeer

Manoir de Grandouet Cidre Fermier BrutThree generations of the Grandval family have been producing traditional cidres in the heart of the Pays d’Auge region of Normandie. Situated a few kilometers west of the town of Lisieux, the current generation, Stephane and Lucile Gandval, farm 28 acres of orchards the traditional way with a herd of 80 milk producing cows. The cows graze amongst the apple orchards and eat the immature apples that fall on the ground. The milk they produce goes to Domaine de Saint Loup where it’s made into Normandie’s famed Camembert cheese.

The Grandval’s grow about 20 different traditional Norman cidre apple varieties that are turned into cidres, pommeaus, and Calvados under the Manoir de Grandouet name.

Appearance: Hazy gold.

Aroma: Funky, rustic apple, barnyard notes, earthy, light buttery notes, caramel.

Taste: Medium- tannins, medium- acidity, medium- astringency.

Overall Impression: Dry and funky, Manoir de Grandouet’s Brut encapsulates the term “fermier” or farmer. It’s rustic and funky and tastes like “farm” in a bottle. While it may not be the cidre for everyone, it’s definitely a great choice for those who like the funkier spectrum of Norman ciders or for those looking for a rustic farmhouse style cider.
