What is Manjistha?

The vine of Manjistha is long and wide-spread, so it is used in coloring Yojnavalli and cloth, hence it is also called Vastranjini.

It is mentioned in the Charaka Samhita for the treatment of erysipelas or herpes in Varna, Vishanga and Javarhar Mahakashaya. It has been calculated in the Priyangvadigana and Pittasamshaman Dravya of Sushruta Samhita. Its trunk is branching from all four angles and hardened towards the root. Its root is very long, cylindrical, smooth, red in fresh state and some black in color when dried.
