“Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.” – Carl Jung

Have you observed how therapeutic it feels to do something with your bare hands? Kneading atta, mixing up soap in liquid, playing in the sand or feeling something soft. It feels amazing, doesn’t it? That’s probably one reason why I’ll never be satisfied doing the dishes with gloves on – I feel like they don’t get clean unless I actually ‘feel’ the soap and water! But that’s the power of tactile sensation, especially for babies, which explains all those ‘touch and feel’ board books!

If you’ve felt the same way, it’s not just a random feeling, its science!  While all the skin on our body is sensitive to touch, our fingers have many special nerve endings that increase their sensitivity greatly. This makes tactile learning a valuable resource for young kids, as it increases their awareness of textures as well as their concentration. The more they pinch, squeeze, roll and stretch, the more their brains are working. And the perfect products for this are gooey substances like play dough and slime.

While play dough is freely available in every store in India, slime isn’t as popular, although I’ve always wanted to try it. My eight year old son was particularly interested as he’s drawn to everything slimy, like most boys his age! Making my own slime was the next option, but most recipes required ingredients that weren’t easy to find, unless you lived in a big city with specialized craft stores. That’s when I came across a slime recipe that could be made with something that was available in every nook and corner of India – good ol’ Fevicol!

I don’t have numbers with me, but I think it’s safe to say that every home with a school going kid is bound to have at least a small bottle of Fevicol MR! We’ve always used it for all our arts and crafts purposes, but now it’s going to shine in a whole new avatar – Fevicol Galaxy Slime! With schools closed for the summer vacation, the kids and I got together to get slimey!

How to make Fevicol Galaxy Slime

Ingredients:

  • 100 gm Fevicol MR
  • 2 tbsp Liquid soap
  • 4 tbsp Water
  • ½ tbsp Baking soda
  • Lens solution / Carrom Board Powder
  • Glitter Paint in colors of your choice

Other Supplies:

  • Large Plastic or Melamine Bowl
  • Small glass bowl and spoon
  • Paintbrush

Instructions to make Fevicol Galaxy Slime:

  1. Add 100 grams of Fevicol MR into the plastic bowl.
  2. Add glitter paint and stir well till the Fevicol MR and paint are completely mixed.
  3. Follow with the liquid soap and mix well again.
  4. In a glass bowl, put baking soda and add water to it. Stir well and leave it aside for a few minutes.
  5. Pour this mixture into the Fevicol-paint bowl. Continue to stir till you get a slimy consistency and you can’t handle it with a spoon.
  6. At this point, you can use your hands to knead the mixture till you get smooth slime.
  7. Add lens solution/ carrom powder for a slimy consistency.

That’s it – easy peasy slime recipe! There are a million ways you can customize this recipe – add sprinkles or glitter for more bling or make slime in different colors. We loved stretching out the slime, folding it and playing with it over and over again! It was also surprisingly a great way to see the kids quiet and enjoying the slime together! And since I knew exactly what was in the slime, I didn’t have to go to the trouble of reading an ingredient list. The best part was that the kids now had a screen-free activity which was relaxing too – even for Mommy!
