Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe yesterday rejected a request to issue an order preventing the protest organised today (9) by political parties and various organisations at the Vihara Maha Devi Park in Colombo.
The Cinnamon Gardens Police informed the Magistrate that the aforesaid protest would obstruct the movement of the public.
Accordingly, the Cinnamon Gardens Police requested an order from the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, preventing the protest from being held in the area. However, the Magistrate denied the Police’s request and instructed the Police to take action under the provisions of the Police Ordinance, if the protesters behaved in a violent manner.
