Magic Eden becomes pornographic after a hosting service is attacked

Magic Eden, a marketplace for nonfungible tokens (NFTs), had to reassure customers on January 3 that their NFTs were “secure” due to an increase in pornographic photographs on its site.

In a January 3 Twitter message, the Solana-based NFT marketplace reminded its followers that it “has not been hacked” and that the “unhealthy photos” were the result of a “compromised” third-party image hosting service.

On January 3, users of Magic Eden noticed on Twitter that loading the archive’s page temporarily displayed a pornographic image instead of the NFT thumbnail.

Others claimed to have seen an image from the show The Big Bang Theory.

“Anyone else seeing The Big Bang Theory series characters speeding up while loading their items on Magic Eden? Have I just seen it,” @yaboibeclownin tweeted about it.

Magic Eden advised customers that a “hard refresh” of their browser will remedy the problem.

A hard refresh frequently requires clearing the browser’s cache and reloading the most recent version of the website.

“Hey guys, our image provider, a 3rd party service we use to cache images, was compromised. Your NFTs are safe and Magic Eden hasn’t been hacked. Unfortunately you may have seen some um, tasteless pictures. Make sure you do a hard refresh on your browser to fix this.”
