Where I Watched It: Paramount Plus
English Audio Description?: No
Toni Collette, who is an amazing actress with shockingly only one nomination, said yes to this mafia comedy. From the perspective of those in the film, thank God she did, but from the perspective of someone who loves Collette, can we please get this lady the Awards worthy performances she is capable of?
Collette plays an American housewife, who has a cheating husband, and could use a fresh start. thank God her grandfather just died, and bequeathed her his Italian mob. So, Collette flies to Italy, not knowing the full reason for her visit, and gets wrapped up in a political power grab, and many attempts on her life. This is a comedy. Kinda.
Monica Bellucci, who apparently didn’t suffer enough in Irreversible, is also stuck in this, and she plays a much more straight character to Collette’s fish out of water. Collette, like most things she does in her life, makes this film work even just a little. She’s endlessly entertaining, even when you realize the film around her is not.
The only problem here is that there is no audio description, and there are several references that suggest the multiple hits, the deaths, the violence, and everything that comes along with a mafia movie need description. plus, Collette is trying to enjoy her best life in a foreign country, so description about Italy would have been nice.
So, this film is escaping a grade from me, because I wasn’t provided audio description. but, my hot take is that a lesser actress wouldn’t have made this film even slightly entertaining, and Toni Collette is good in a film that by all accounts is a dud.
Final Grade: Unwatchable
