Have you ever wanted something so much you’d move heaven and earth just to get it? Well, that’s what Madison Reed did (okay, maybe not the moving heaven and earth thing, but pretty close, especially for dog lovers)!

Like any other kid who wish to have a dog, Madison told her parents that she wants to own one. To teach their daughter the essence of responsibility, her parents made a deal with Madison. If she can save enough money to pay for the adoption fee of a dog, then she can have one.

Not to be deterred with the goal, then-11 years old Madison, started making dog leashes and collars to sell. Within weeks of selling these leashes and collars, that read “I Want Dog” by the way (pretty clever!), Madison was able to raise $225 for the adoption fee. And so she got Lucy!

Now 16 and a Junior in high school, Madison’s business of dog leashes and collars is still up and running. Her business earnings are primarily used for Lucy’s vet care. In five years, she has sold approximately 1,000 dog collars and about 500 dog leashes. Ten percent of the profit, she donates to Humane Society.

The lesson of the story? If you really want something, work for it, be serious about it and eventually, you’d reap the rewards for your hard work. Nothing sweeter than a sweet dog as a reward!
