Not long after enjoying Ayn Rand's novel, Atlas Shrugged, some years ago, I came across a comment which said something along the lines of, "Yes, but there are no children in her books." Having not read all her other books, I can't say whether or not this is a true statement, but it was stated, so there it is. Socialist university professors don't often have children either, although not having met every socialist university professor I can't say if that's true every time, but sometimes it is. The idea has stuck with me over time and in many debates. Full disclosure, at the time of writing, I have no kids.
Capitalists applaud Ayn Rand as the antidote to socialist femi-poli-academia(*) who lays out her foundational truth this way,
"I am not primarily an advocate of capitalism, but of egoism; I am not primarily an advocate of egoism, but of reason. If one recognizes the supremacy of reason and applies it consistently, all the rest follows. This—the supremacy of reason—was, is and will be the primary concern of my work, and the essence of Objectivism." (#)
Just when you think you know someone...
Whatever. Set that aside for a minute and compare these two ideas, if you will:
First, Joe Carter, Acton Institute: "Objectivism’s focus on radical individualism cuts it off from reality and causes it to wither under scrutiny."
Second, Chrissie Dhanagom, guest of The Matt Walsh Blog:
And as a woman, so I am told, I must above all, first and foremost, protect the sole and absolute claim I have on my body. There is no pledge I can make of my body that I should not be able to take back. So say the legions of feminists who have protested, leafleted, marched, written and spoken on my behalf.
The problem is, my children seemed to have missed the cultural memo.
The kids always nail it, don't they? May God bless America with many babies for they are the blessing through which reality embraces us with sticky arms of love. Who has the stomach for the idealistic bondage calling out, "Big government loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life," when you've only slept for three hours and little junior, whom you had a hand in creating, just barfed on your shirt. And egoism and objectivism are supposed to be the answer? Tell that to your smelly shirt. Yes, your bleary eyes and late-night stench testify to...love. And that's what's missing in big government and state control - the love. It is tough to speak of it convincingly at press conferences in a power suit.
Somehow Ronald Regan used to be able to do it. So I end with him and one last question.
Actually all systems are capitalist. It’s just a matter of who owns & controls the capital–ancient king, dictator or private individual. (President Ronald Regan (1979))
Who really loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life?
