Hey guys! It’s been a while, hasn’t it?
Yeah… Let me explain a bit; I’m a college student who, for some reason, decides to pack my schedule in order to get out of school as soon as possible. The only downside is that I still love to write, so I decided to stay on with the blog. On top of that, I’ve become the assistant news editor at my school’s online publication (more responsibilities! Yay!), so needless to say, it’s been hectic for me to keep up with that while still watching the new season, let alone writing about and critically analyzing it. But now I’m BACK (or so I say…).
Anywho, let’s get down to business here. Because my schedule is always so busy and I still wanted to cover something in the Spring season, I came up with this idea where I pick out a handful of shows I might like, talk a bit about them, then update my thoughts on them at the midseason point, then one final post when the season is done. Yeah, I did miss the start of the season a couple of weeks back, but that was during my busiest time of the semester, so I couldn’t do the episodic blogging that I did when I first started writing here back in 2013. However, Neomo has been doing a fantastic job picking up all the slack I left him.
Looking over the Spring 2015 season, I can’t help but feel massively disappointed. It seems that half of the shows are either kids shows or harems, all of which spell disaster in my book. There aren’t any shows that I’m super excited to see, which is pretty rare. Despite that, I managed to find seven titles that I’m going to give a chance to. As always, I’m avoiding sequels, such as Baby Steps 2, and carryovers, such as JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. I also tried to stick to 12-13 episode anime, so only a couple are 24 episode seasons.
Here are the shows from the Spring 2015 season that I’ve been somewhat interested in: *Note: at the time of writing this, I haven’t seen an episode of any show listed here*
Re-Kan!
The basic plot of Re-Kan! is that it follows a girl who can see ghosts, and that’s about it. As for personal interest, this one’s pretty low. I only decided to check it out because there’s a slight chance that it’ll at least have some entertaining moments in it, plus it doesn’t seem like the worst show to pick. Am I expecting good characters, witty writing, or a good plot? Absolutely not. I just want to be marginally entertained with this one.
The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki Chan
As a friend put it, “Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu is just the Haruhi Suzumiya characters turned into moe-blobs!“. Yeah, that’s the gist of it to me. In all honesty, I’m expecting this one to be the worst of all, and I’m half hoping it’s so bad that it’s good. If it weren’t in any way tied to the Haruhi Suzumiya universe, there’s no way I’d watch it. But since I have somewhat of an investment in the series, I thought that it might be neat to check this one out. If the planets align, maybe, just maybe I might end up liking this one. We’ll just have to see.
Seraph of The End
Apparently this show’s about viruses, vampires, and vampire hunting. I never really cared much about vampires, but it seems that nowadays, everyone tries to do vampires differently, so I’m a bit curious to see what direction this show goes in. In all honesty, it doesn’t look bad. In fact, it looks like it might be a good shounen-anime. As long as the action is good and the characters are bearable, then it might just be something I’ll enjoy.
Plastic Memories
Plastic Memories is, for me, the wild card of the list. On one hand, it seems like an okay premise. Essentially, from what I can gather, it’s about a guy who is surrounded by android women (or gynoids. Yeah, letting my sci-fi nerdiness show with no shame). The most telling aspect of the show is that, given the premise, there’s no “harem” tag to be found in any synopsis. Really? A guy surrounded by gynoids and there’s no harem? Maybe they all flubbed the tags, but if it truly isn’t a harem, then it might have promise. Other than that, the plot synopses I’ve read are very vague, so it’s hard to form any sort of opinion on the show, although I will say that this is the show I’m most curious to look into.
Kekkai Sensen
I don’t know about this one. The premise sounds kind of cliché. It just seems like a stereotypical supernatural/super-power anime that doesn’t really try to do anything special, but I could be wrong. I’m just fearful that this title could be very boring, which is an instant turn-off for me, as it probably is for most people.
Ore Monogatari!!
Ore Monogatari!! is the show this season I’m expecting to like the most. I’m a big drama fan, and I tend to gravitate more towards shoujo titles, so this one seems like one that’ll be good. Titles like this rely heavily on characters, and from what I’ve read from the synopsis, all these characters seem to have something going for them. As long as this title has good dialog and treats the audience with some form of respect and doesn’t insult our intelligence, then this could be a great show.
Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma
I don’t have much of an investment in this title, but it was recommended by Justin, so it has that going for it. When I was going through the shows I was going to check out this season, I almost put this one on my list, but didn’t because it seemed too… boring, I guess? I don’t know about this one, it looks okay. However, there’s a good chance that this one will either be one of my favorites of the season or my least favorite of all. Like all the titles I’ve talked about, only time will tell.
That’s just a brief overview of my first impressions based on synopses. I’ll update with another post when we’re at the midseason point in a couple of weeks to see just how wrong all my initial thoughts on these shows are!
