Loney Dear has shared latest single ‘Trifles’ ahead of the release of new album ‘A Lantern and a Flag’, via Peter Gabriel’s Real World label, on 26 March. Described as a central track ofthe record, ‘Trifles’ starts off in sparse, almost ambient fashion with Emil Svanängen’s gentle falsetto gliding over a stripped-back piano sound while the lyrics head into darker spaces – the first verse mentions ‘concrete shoes’, a reference to ‘when someone messes with the wrong people and gets sunk in the water in Nybroviken, outside the theatre…’ The second verse is also full of nautical references as ambient electronic sounds make an appearance and Emil starts to play around with layers – think Thom Yorke collaborating with Nordic Giants – before a surprise whistle and a drum-laden outro…
