Building the Victoria Embankment - A Story in Stone

The construction of the Victoria Embankment is one of London's greatest engineering projects. This walk will reveal the history of embanking the Thames, reveal important engineering considerations such as accommodating the River Fleet and the Metropolitan Line and tell the complex story of procuring the 500,000 cubic metres of granite required to embank the Thames. We will also look at the stones of Cleopatra's Needle, Somerset House and Blackfriars Bridge. Guided by University College London Geologist Ruth - it all comes down to the guiding! N.B. The walk takes about two hours and will end at Blackfriars Station.

Ruth is a geologist at University College London. She researches geological materials used in art, architecture and archaeology. She is interested in the natural history of cities and this includes the fossils and crystals that we walk past every day. Ruth has appeared on the BBC World Service programme Science Now and regularly writes and blogs on building stones.
