London Bridges No.5: Blackfriars
History: The original bridge at Blackfriars was the third such crossing on the Thames (1769) – after London Bridge and Westminster Bridge. The current bridge dates from 1869 and was opened by Queen Victoria on the same day that she opened Holborn Viaduct. It entered the annals of infamy in 1982 when Roberto Calvi – nicknamed “God’s Banker” – was found hanging from one of its arches in an apparent suicide that was later found to be murder.
Famous Friends: The bridge features in the movies The Avengers (1998) and Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
Did You Know…?: Blackfriars Bridge is a Grade II Listed structure and its entire span falls with The City of London.
