Guiding a group of German students on Monday, we were delighted to see…

…this Moorhen family in St James's Park.
Moorhens – with their black plumage and distinctive red beaks – can be found in both parks and around the canals in London. Both the male and the female incubate the eggs and they can have up to three broods each year. With so many young, it is common that older "adolescent" members of earlier broods take part in the "babysitting". Omniverous, moorhens feed on small rodents, eggs, plants and amphibians.
A London Walk costs £9 – £7 concession. To join a London Walk, simply meet your guide at the designated tube station at the appointed time. Details of all London Walks can be found at www.walks.com.
