Where to Stay in Lombok
Lombok has accommodation for every taste and budget. If you’re looking to stay close to the action, Kuta on the south coast is a great choice.
This laid-back town is the hub of Lombok’s surfing scene, with a range of guesthouses, boutique hotels, and beachfront resorts.
Staying in Kuta gives you easy access to some of the island’s best beaches, surf spots, restaurants, and cafés.
For something more luxurious, consider staying at Amber Lombok Beach Resort or TUNAK Resort. Here, you’ll enjoy stunning views, infinity pools, and world-class amenities.
Even if you’re not staying overnight, many resorts welcome day visitors. Just order food or drinks to enjoy the facilities.
My Favourite Things to Do in Lombok
1. Surf the South Coast
Lombok’s south coast is a surfer’s paradise, with waves that cater to all levels, from beginners to seasoned pros.
Kuta is the main base for surfing in Lombok, with several surf schools and shops where you can rent equipment and arrange lessons.
Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan, and Gerupuk Inside are all fantastic spots for beginners, with forgiving waves and plenty of teachers.
For those with more experience, check out Mawi and Gerupuk Outside.
If you’re an advanced surfer, Desert Point is often described as one of the best waves in the world.
2. Chase Waterfalls
Lombok’s waterfalls are nothing short of spectacular, often hidden within dense, emerald-green jungles.
Two of the island’s most famous and spectacular falls, Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile, are located near Senaru village in the north. Each offers a magical escape into nature with lush surroundings.
To reach these waterfalls, you’ll need to hike through the jungle, crossing streams and navigating rocky paths, but the effort is well worth it.
The refreshing swim at the base of the falls is the perfect reward after your hike.
Air Terjun Semporonan is another of my favorite waterfalls in Lombok. It’s more of a hidden gem – there weren’t any other people there when I visited.
3. Discover Tetebatu
Tetebatu is a picturesque village located in the foothills of Mount Rinjani, offering a tranquil escape from the busier areas of Lombok.
The village is surrounded by rice paddies, forests, and waterfalls. It’s an ideal spot for hiking and exploring the local countryside.
Guided walks through the rice fields offer a chance to see traditional farming in action while soaking in the peaceful surroundings.
The village is also a gateway to several other hidden waterfalls, like Jeruk Manis. (Just beware of fake “guides” and scams at this waterfall, and agree on a price before setting out on the trail.)
4. Escape to the Secret Gilis
While the Gili Islands off the northwest coast of Lombok are famous, and (dare I say it) a little overtouristed, the Secret Gilis are pure paradise.
Located off the southwest coast, this small group of islands remains relatively unknown and untouched by mass tourism.
Gili Asahan is one of the most beautiful and peaceful of these islands. My partner took me here for my birthday this year, and it was pure bliss.
With their clear waters, quiet beaches, and tranquil setting, the Secret Gilis are perfect for snorkelling, kayaking, or simply unwinding by the sea.
With only a handful of small guesthouses and resorts, it’s a great spot to disconnect.
5. Hang Out at a Fancy Resort
A day at one of Lombok’s luxury resorts is the perfect way to enjoy the island’s natural beauty in style.
Amber Lombok Beach Resort and TUNAK Resort are two excellent options, with beachfront locations, infinity pools, and exceptional service.
Many resorts welcome day visitors, and you can use their facilities simply by ordering food or drinks.
Whether you’re lounging by the pool, dining with ocean views, or strolling along a quiet beach, these resorts offer a serene escape.
6. Enjoy the View at Ashtari
Ashtari sits high in the hills above Kuta, with stunning views of Lombok’s coastline and rolling hills.
This relaxed café and restaurant is an ideal spot to unwind, whether you’re enjoying a leisurely meal, sipping on a fresh juice, or joining one of their yoga sessions.
Just look at that view!
Ashtari is especially magical at sunset, with the golden light casting a warm glow over the landscape.
The food is excellent too – and largely sourced from their own permaculture garden. I had the best rendang of my life here!
7. Explore by Scooter
One of the best ways to explore Lombok is by renting a scooter and setting off on a day trip around the island.
The roads in Lombok are generally quiet, and the scenery is spectacular, making it a perfect destination for a scooter adventure.
From Kuta, you can easily reach some of the island’s most beautiful beaches and scenic viewpoints along the south coast.
Or, head inland to discover traditional local villages and rice terraces.
Renting a scooter gives you the freedom to get off the beaten track and explore Lombok’s hidden gems at your own pace.
8. Visit the Beaches on the South Coast
Lombok’s south coast is home to some of the most stunning beaches in Indonesia, each with its own unique charm.
Tanjung Aan is one of my favourites, with its soft white sand and turquoise waters perfect for swimming and relaxing.
Mawun Beach is another gem, with a more secluded feel and dramatic surrounding hills.
The beaches on the south coast are generally much less crowded and less commercialised than those in Bali.
If you’re looking for some peaceful, laid-back beach time and don’t mind the lack of facilities, you’re in luck.
9. Trek Mount Rinjani
Mount Rinjani, an active volcano and the second-highest peak in Indonesia, is a must-visit for any adventurer visiting Lombok.
The trek to the summit is challenging, but the rewards are immense. Spectacular views, the breathtaking Segara Anak Crater Lake, and an enormous sense of accomplishment.
The trek typically takes two to three days, and you need to go with a guide, both for safety and to help you navigate the challenging terrain.
The hike is only open during the dry season, from May to October, as heavy rains in the wet season make the trails unsafe.
Sadly, when I visited Lombok in December, the routes were closed. It’s definitely something I’d love to do next time I’m there, though.
The Best Time to Visit Lombok
The best time to visit Lombok is during the dry season, which runs from May to October.
During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, with minimal rain – perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, surfing, and exploring the island.
The peak tourist season is from July to August, so if you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting in May, June, or September.
The rainy season in Lombok is from November to April, with the heaviest rainfall typically occurring in January and February.
While the island is incredibly lush and beautiful during this time, the weather may dampen your plans, especially if you want to hike or relax on the beach.
How Long Do You Need in Lombok?
To fully appreciate Lombok, slow travel is the way to go. I recommend spending at least a week there.
This gives you time to enjoy the main attractions, relax on the beaches, and explore some hidden gems.
A 10-day trip allows for a more relaxed pace, with time for Mount Rinjani, the Secret Gilis, and a few other trips.
If you have only five days, focus on the south coast beaches and either a visit to the Secret Gilis or the waterfalls around Tetebatu.
FAQs About Visiting Lombok
Is Lombok safe to visit?
Yes, Lombok is generally very safe to visit. Drink spiking and petty crimes like bag snatching can happen in tourist areas, so keep your belongings secure and never leave drinks unattended. Be cautious when riding scooters, and avoid driving at night in remote areas.
How conservative is Lombok?
Lombok is more conservative than Bali, with a predominantly Muslim population. While beach areas are generally relaxed, it’s respectful to dress modestly in other places, especially in villages or religious sites. Swimwear is fine on the beach, but covering up when leaving the shore is appreciated.
What should I pack for a trip to Lombok?
Pack lightweight clothing, swimwear, and sturdy sandals or shoes for exploring. You’ll also want sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent. A sarong is useful for covering up. If riding a scooter, pack a lightweight jacket and consider a waterproof bag in case of sudden rain. If you plan to trek Mount Rinjani, bring hiking boots and warmer layers.
How do I get around Lombok?
The best way to get around Lombok is by renting a scooter, which gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace. Scooters are widely available for rent in tourist areas like Kuta, and the roads are generally quiet and well-maintained. Alternatively, you can hire a car with a driver if you prefer. Public transport options are limited.
Final Thoughts
Mass tourism hasn’t taken off in most of Lombok yet, which makes now a perfect time to visit.
Whether you’re catching waves, trekking volcanic peaks, or relaxing on a secluded beach, this beautiful island offers an authentic and unforgettable travel experience.
If you’re looking to escape the crowds and discover a different side of Indonesia, Lombok should definitely be on your list.
