Logitech X50 Portable Wireless Speaker : Review with Pros & Cons

Posted on the 14 August 2017 by Jyoti Arora @Jy0tiAr0ra

My laptop speakers aren't loud enough at times, especially for listening to podcasts. So, I needed a wireless portable speaker, which I could also use with my mobile phone.

Amazon has many new and innovative portable bluetooth speakers, as well as portable speakers by LG and other top brands. I checked reviews of lots of them and zeroed in on Logitech X-50 as it was one of the top-rated ones. I read Amazon reviews and watched some YouTube reviews. The reviews convinced me to get the Logitech X-50 portable speaker.

I've been using the Logitech X50 for a couple weeks now, so let's have a look at the pros and cons.

PROS

Very Portable and Pocketable:

The Logitech X50 is quite portable, can easily fit in the palm of your hand. You can even put it into your pocket and keep listening. I usually put it in my T-Shirt pocket, but as easily put it in my trouser pockets.

Volume and Bluetooth Buttons:

The speaker has two buttons for volume (+ and -) and one power on/off-cum-bluetooth button. The speaker volume is independent of the device volume you connect the speaker to.

Good amount of bass and treble:

Even at the small size the speaker is, the amount of bass and lows it produces is decently awesome. Even at 100% volume, you won't hear distortion in the sound. But, usually, you won't want to hear it at 100%, because it is too loud. Treble is fine too.

Line-In Jack:

Do you have an old feature phone which doesn't have bluetooth? You can connect it to the speaker using a standard AUX cable to the speaker's 3.5 mm line-in jack. The cable is available at all electronics spare parts shops, and even at Amazon.

Rubberized Base:

The speaker has a rubberized base which won't let it vibrate, move or fall from where you keep it. This is a needed feature on portable speakers.

Handle to tie a lanyard:

The speaker has a small handle at one end. Though you can hold it by the handle, it is hard to hold it for long like this. So, you may want to tie a lanyard to the handle, and put it across your neck. And, slip the speaker into your shirt pocket.

Less than 2 hours to charge:

The speaker takes about 2 hours to charge completely. How do you know when the speaker battery is fully charged? The purple blinking LED goes off and there is no LED light at all.

Battery Lasts More than a Day:

I listened to different kinds of music, sounds and podcasts. These differed in bitrate. But, I didn't have to charge the speaker for nearly a day and a half.

If you play audiophile quality music all the time, you won't get such battery backup. Because, higher the quality of sound (more the bitrate), more the battery power needed. Also, if you listen at 100% volume, the battery will discharge quicker.

Charge it while listening to music:

The Logitech X50 supports charging while you listen to your music. You don't have to switch it off. If the battery goes down, the speaker beeps every few minutes.

Connect the USB charging cable to your laptop, smartphone charger, or even a power bank. And, continue listening to your great music collection.

Price:

I got it in a deal at 1,150/-, last May. Even now, you can get it at about 1100/- in a lightning deal, at Amazon.

CONS

Very short USB charging cable:

The USB charging cable that comes with the speaker is about 6 inches in length. This is too short.

No instructions on what different modes it has and what the beeps mean:

There is no instructions manual. The paper that comes with the device has minimal text/content on it. It only mentions how to pair it with bluetooth devices.

Have to unpair with current device to pair with another:

If you want to pair it with another device, you have to unpair it by long pressing the power button on the speaker. If you don't do that, the other device won't be able to find the speaker during bluetooth scan. This is irritating.

Output volume of wired connection is lower than bluetooth:

The sound volume at 100% when you play your music by using the AUX input, is much lesser than with bluetooth.

Logitech X50 Review:

The Logitech X50 is a great portable speaker, if you want to listen to your music on the go, or even inside your home. This is a value for money gadget, I can recommend as I myself use it. The Logitech X50 is the best seller in the portable speakers category at Amazon. Get it, you won't repent your decision.
