This was taken during my second visit to the amazing Speyer Technik Museum. This facility has several exhibition galleries with over 70 airplanes and helicopters on display, many of them outdoors perched on columns. This Messerschmitt-built F-104 is sporting the striking colors of the West German Navy flight demonstration duo, the Vikings. Formed in 1983, the Vikings only performed until 1986 when the F-104 was retired from German naval use. Lockheed (and foreign production) delivered 1,122 of these G-variant Starfighters as multi-role fighter-bombers with beefier structure, more fuel capacity and improved combat maneuvering.
