Lockheed EC-121T Warning Star (1049A Super Constellation)

@ Colorado Springs, CO

December 2013

Centerpiece of the Peterson AFB Museum collection, this EC-121T Warning Star (a military version of the Lockheed Super Constellation airliner) was delivered to the museum directly after retirement in 1978.  Delivered in January 1955, this aircraft saw duty in the US and in Asia before finishing its career in Iceland. The EC-121 airborne early warning radar surveillance aircraft was introduced in 1954 and phased out in 1978, although a single specially modified EW aircraft remained in USN service until 1982. To compensate for the aerodynamic effect of the radomes, the vertical stabilizers of the Warning Stars had to be enlarged. USAF Warning Stars served during the Vietnam War both as electronic sensor monitors and as a forerunner to the Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS.  A total production run of 232 were produced.
