Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy

@ Honolulu, HI

December 2024

On a trip to Hawaii, I spotted this Travis-based C-5M while we were taxiing after landing. Hickam AFB shares runways with adjacent Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), operating a single airport complex operated under a joint-use agreement. Upgrades to the USAF fleet of fifty C-5Bs and two C-5Cs were completed by August 2018, these aircraft are now designated C-5M Super Galaxy. The C-5M is an upgraded version with new engines and modernized avionics designed to extend its service life beyond 2040.  Introduced in 1970, 131 C-5s were produced. While Lockheed was selected as the winner of the USAF contract in 1965, Boeing would go on and develop their design concept into the 747 airliner.
