@The Museum of Flight, Seattle, WA
May 2013
From my very first and overdue trip to The Museum of Flight in Seattle. The “Airpark” area houses their larger aircraft outdoors. First flown in 1954, the “Super G” was the most successful version of the Lockheed Super Constellations (102 built) and one of the most graceful piston-engine aircraft ever. For long range operations, the Super G could be fitted with extra wingtip tanks increasing the fuel capacity by two-thirds more than the original “Connie” models. Trans-Canada Air Lines operated a fleet of 14 Super Constellations and was the flag carrier for Canada from 1937 to 1965, when it was renamed Air Canada. The last commercial flight of a L-1049 Super Constellation was in 1993, when the Federal Aviation Administration banned airlines from the Dominican Republic that flew Constellations to the United States (due to safety concerns).
