Have you wondered how a day in the life of a herder is? A tribe that works hard to raise domesticated animals and move from place to place in search of pastures for their animals, the life of pastorlists is anything but easy. They derive their food and other resources from herding animals like goat, sheep, camels, cattle etc. They lead almost nomadic lives in search of pastures for their animals and water sources.
Some of the common pastoralists of the Deccan include the Kurubas, Kurumas, Lambadas, Todas, Yadavas, Yerra Gollas, Golkars and Kadu Gollas. And showcasing the lives and livelihood of these men and women is Living Lightly Utsav 2025, an initiative of the Centre for Pastoralism, New Delhi.
A visit to the exhibition is an immersive experience to say the least with insightful displays, information boards and photographs.
There is an eclectic display of pastoral arts and crafts. So, from the kamblis of the Kurubas, shawls and home decor items by the Toda community to leather puppetry by the herders from Andhra Pradesh and kauna grass artefacts from Karnataka, there is a lot to see and support the community.
Further, there are live workshops where you can learn the art of flower making from the Kishkinda trust, Bakarwal embroidery, Khaddi loom weaving, the art of cheesemaking and much more. Prior registration is required for these workshops.
