The Merseyside club had the opportunity to set a new point record in the English Premier League, needing to win all of their remaining matches to exceed the 100 point total established by Manchester City two seasons ago.
But, following unusual individual mistakes from the usually reliable Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, those hopes were dashed after a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal on Wednesday.
The march to burn their names in the record books seemed well on the right path for the Liverpool players when Sadio Mane gave them a well deserved lead after 20 minutes.
But a defensive pass from defenseman Van Dijk allowed Alexandre Lacazette to equalize for Arsenal, while the poor clearance by goalkeeper Alisson allowed Lacazette to compete for Reiss Nelson.
After suffering his third league defeat of a successful season, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said his players "need to learn" from the result.
"I can't do something negative from something so positive; we get the points we deserve and we will see how much it will be. These boys have played an exceptional season; nobody can take that away from them", he told the media.
"I am disappointed and angry at certain things, but the match was good, the attitude was good, but we took a break and that is why we lost the match. It's football; someone is surprised that these boys are human beings - I am not. From time to time, they are not perfect. "
Van Dijk took full responsibility for his mistake but rejected the idea that mistakes like his are more common after a team has won the title.
"It's too easy to say that; it's too easy to blame that too I think," he said.
"If you watched the game, you can see that until I made a mistake, there was nothing wrong. We played well. I felt like we could win here comfortably at some point given, but obviously if you give them the goals, you see what happens. "

A unique trophy presentation
After being crowned champion, lifting the trophy in front of their fans is something that Liverpool players have been looking forward to.
But because fans can't attend the games to prevent the spread of Covid-19, it's not something fans can see in person this season.
However, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will lift the Premier League trophy on a specially erected podium in the club's iconic Kop Stand after Wednesday's game against Chelsea.

Club legends Sir Kenny Dalglish - and club manager in the club's last win in 1990 - will award medals before players step onto the podium, which will be surrounded by fan banners.
However, to avoid scenes similar to those after the team won the title in June - when fans ignored social distancing guidelines to gather in large numbers to celebrate - the club urged fans to "stay at home to enjoy the ceremony "and" not travel to Anfield. "
