Remember when I read and reviewed The Stud Book by Monica Drake? I got the most delightful email last week from a film company, Red 14 Films, that is producing literary short films for Drake’s book along with these titles:
1. Neighbors of Nothing by Jason Ockert
2. In The House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods by Matt Bell
3. This Jealous Earth by Scott Dominic Carpenter
The Kickstarter campaign launched on July 19th, I’ve included more information about the project from Red 14 Films below:

and†Scott†Dominic†Carpenter†to†Produce†Literary†Short†Films†for†Each†of†their†Most

Los Angeles, CA (June 28, 2013) Since
its inception in 2011, the independent film
production company Red 14 Films has produced over forty literary short films, known also
as cinematic book trailers. Their decidedly artistic approach has earned them
partnerships with authors such as Anthony Swofford (Jarhead), Victoria Redel (Loverboy),
and Stefan Kiesbye (Your House is on Fire, Your Children All Gone), and performances in
their productions by actors like Oscar nominee Eric Roberts.
Red 14 Films’ latest project is a Kickstarter campaign to fund four new literary shorts
involving authors Jason Ockert, Matt Bell, Monica Drake, and Scott Dominic Carpenter.
The campaign will have a 40day
fundraising windowfrom
start to finish. If the allotted
budget ($10,000 US) isn’t raised, all pledges are cancelled and the films will not be funded.
Backer incentives include signed book copies, journal subscriptions, online workshops,
and free literary shorts. The books’ publishing houses (Dzanc Books, MG Press, and Soho
Press) are also offering book bundles and eBooks.
The campaign will launch on July 15th, at 9am PST.
With the publishing industry in flux, digital media is currently the most effective marketing
tool. The shorts create the opportunity to squeeze in more than an author can with a blurb
or a jacket synopsis and at the same time, they exist as an art form unto themselves, unlike
a commercial or a direct ad.
“The authors and the publishers are behind this in a big way,” says Red 14 Films’ president
Adam Cushman. “There’s an opportunity with this campaign not just to create four exquisite
shorts, but to generate new possibilities for writers, both established and struggling, to
reach their audiences.”
The book titles in the campaign include:
1. Neighbors†of†Nothing†by Jason Ockert. (Dzanc Books). Neighbors†of†Nothing†is the
followup
to Ockert’s collection Rabbit†Punches.
2. In†the†House†Upon†the†Dirt†Between†the†Lake†and†the†Woods†by Matt Bell (Soho
Press).
3. This†Jealous†Earth†by Scott Dominic Carpenter (MG Press), which is Carpenter’s debut
title as well as the Chicagobased
publisher’s first book.
4. The†Stud†Book†by Monica Drake (Crown Publishers).
Regarding the campaign, author Matt Bell says, “I think this is an exciting way to expand the
audience for novels.”
