Lisunov Li-2T

@ Budapest, Hungary

March 2022

On my fourth trip to Budapest I was finally able to visit the Aeropark museum located adjacent to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. This is a very cool collection of Soviet-era airliners used by MALÉV Hungarian Airlines the flag carrier of Hungary (1946-2012). The Lisunov Li-2 (NATO reporting name: Cab), was a license-built Soviet-version of the Douglas DC-3. In production from 1939-52, almost 5,000 were delivered for use by the Soviet Air Force and Aeroflot airlines. A production license was awarded to the USSR in 1936 and engineer Boris Lisunov spent two years at the Douglas Aircraft Company translating the design and converting hardware to metric dimensions. One airworthy Li-2 exists in Europe, also in Budapest.
