Listening to "Break on Through" in the Old Music Museum and Analyzing and Appreciating It.

By Bbenzon @bbenzon

This is deeply weird. Just set aside the fact that it’s weird to watch someone else reacting to music.

I heard this song when it first came out. I don't think me and my peers are her target audience. But who is? Some of the people who comment are clearly knowledgeable about The Doors. Are they Boomers, like me, or are they younger people who are interested in and knowledgeable about The Doors.

And the visual, with the harp in the foreground at the right, the electric guitar in the background, and church lady front and center wearing headphones. This does not compute. But it surely does, for someone. And her stage name, for that's what “Virgin Rock” is. Her real name is Amy Shafer. This is a canny bit of cultural play.

Her analysis is fine. But why? It's not that I have any objection to analyzing music. I'm a musician. I do it all the time. Look around here on the Savanna. You'll find analysis all over the place. Why is she doing this? She’s a musician; perhaps she’s analyzing it simply because she likes to analyze music. Or is she somehow hoping to capture some mystery? I have the same questions for her audience.

Weird. Interesting. Why?
