Ballots are being counted in Brazil in the run-off election between current right-wing president Jair Bolsanaro and past president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. There are allegations of voter suppression, with roadblocks stopping voters from getting to the polls. Bolsanaro has also indicated that he will follow the strategy laid out by Donald Trump to not accept a defeat, insinuating that his loss would indicate election fraud. Bolsanaro has removed limits to deforestation of Brazil's rain forest and ramped up mining on Indigenous land.
Russia has withdrawn from an agreement that would have allowed shipping of Ukrainian grain to countries desperate for food after alleging that its fleet was attacked by Ukrainian drones, exacerbating a food crisis that is affecting Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia and is increasing global food prices. A statement by a spokesperson of the UN Security Council claims that Russia is using "the war it started as a pretext for weaponizing food.”
Wide-spread protests in Iran continue after the death of Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested by morality police.
A home invasion and hammer attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband Peter was perpetrated by a man who had a blog filled with antisemitism and conspiracy theories. Elon Musk, who now owns Twitter, responded to tweets about the attacks with links to articles containing... conspiracy theories (apparently, these tweets have been deleted now).
