And some of us are overlooking it.

As posted in The Australian, a person in the name Mr Abbott has feared that “Australians could fall behind in its relations with Asia if more people didn’t recognize the importance of learning a second language.”

“I think there is a terrible danger of Australians slipping into linguistic laziness because English is the world’s second language,” Mr Abbott said.

This is not new to us, isn’t it? In fact, whether we are aware of this or not, those who has been natively speaking English language has also been overlooking at the importance of learning other foreign languages since we are considering the universal influence that the English language contains. Since most foreign language speakers choose to learn English language rather than English speakers learning foreign language, there will be tendencies that we will also be in danger of “slipping into linguistic laziness”, not just the mentioned race.

“If we’re to take other cultures seriously we need to be able to speak to them in their language.” He said, which I totally agree.

So resist that linguistic laziness and don’t just settle for your English skills by not learning other foreign languages. In the communicative aspect, it foreign language learning has lots of advantages; and for others, there can be more.
