LG Tone Ultra Headphones Review

At first, I will admit, I was baffled by the design of the headphones. I couldn’t figure them out and had to look them up to make sure I was doing it right. The LG Tone Ultras are worn in a very unique way: they have a base circlet that rests on the wearer’s collarbone, and the earbuds are attached by retractable cords.

Once I figured out how to wear the headphones, I saw the appeal. For those of us out there who prefer in-ear to over-ear, these headphones give you all the mobility of an over-ear Bluetooth headset while retaining the in-ear structure. No cords getting in the way, much less falling out as you walk, and easily accessible controls. And once I got used to them, I found I really liked the slight weight of the circlet on my collarbone.

Now it’s all well and good to talk about the fit and feel of the headphones, but at some point we’re going to have to talk about the sound. Despite the $100 price point, I have to admit that the Tone Ultras are not quite up to par. The crispness and clarity of the music is comparable to that played on a $40 pair of Sony earbuds I purchased at the airport. I recently purchased a pair of Beats Urbeats earbuds, which also cost $100, and have a slightly crisper sound with much richer bass tones than the LG Tone Ultras.

All in all the Tone Ultras are a decent set of headphones, but the excellent fit, feel and ease of use can’t make up entirely for the average quality sound.
