Lewis Hamilton: ‘Sad and disappointing’ to read Ecclestone comments

The six-time world champion started by writing, "Shit, I don't even know where to start with this one." Hamilton later called Ecclestone's comments both "ignorant" and "uneducated".

Ecclestone led Formula 1 for around 40 years before being replaced as managing director in 2017.

"Bernie is out of sport and a different generation, but that's exactly what's wrong - ignorant and uneducated comments that show us how far as a society we have to go before a real equality can happen, "Hamilton wrote.

"It makes perfect sense to me now that nothing has been said or done to make our sport more diverse or to address the racial abuse that I have received throughout my career.

"If someone who has run the sport for decades has such a lack of understanding of the depth [sic] the routine problems that we black people deal with every day, how can we expect all the people who work under him to understand. It starts at the top.

"Now is the time for change. I will continue to push for an inclusive future for our sport with equal opportunities for all.

"To create a world that offers equal opportunities to minorities. I will continue to use my voice to represent those who do not have one and speak on behalf of those who are under-represented to give a chance to have a chance in our sport. "

Formula 1 Declaration

"I don't think it will hurt or do good for Formula 1," he said.

"It will only make people think, which is more important. I think it's the same for everyone. People should think a little bit and think," Well, what the hell. Someone is not the same as whites and blacks should think the same is true for whites.

"In many cases, black people are more racist than white people."
