WHAT IS LEVAQUIN (LEVOFLOXACIN)?
Levaquin (Levofloxacin) is a medication used to treat various bacterial infections including pneumonia, acute bacterial sinusitis, H. pylori, urinary tract infections (UTIs) and chronic prostatitis. Levaquin is an antibiotic medicine, which belongs to a group of drugs called Fluoroquinolones.

- Fast heart rate
- Feeling anxious or shaky
- Nervousness
- Confusion
- Agitation
- Paranoia
- Weakness in the arms, hands, legs or feet
- Severe stomach pain
- Diarrhea that is watery or bloody
- Fluttering in the chest
- Shortness of breath
- Burning pain in the arms, hands, legs or feet
- Clay-colored stools
- Serious mood or behavioral changes
- Vision problems
- Pain behind the eyes
- Skin rash
- Breathing problems
- Seizures (convulsions)
- Severe headaches
- Upper stomach pain
- Loss of appetite
- Dark urine
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
- Tendon rupture
- Movement problems
- A snapping or popping sound in any of your joints
- Numbness or tingling in the hands, arms, legs or feet
INTERACTIONS:
This medicine may interact with other medicines and can cause serious health side-effects. Tell your doctor, if you're taking other medications such as:
- Amlodipine
- Doxycycline
- Furosemide
- Advair Diskus (Fluticasone/Salmeterol)
- Singulair (Montelukast)
- Gabapentin
- Lasix (furosemide)
- Albuterol
- Omeprazole
- Tylenol (acetaminophen)
- Levothyroxine
- Metformin
- Lisinopril
- Prednisone
- Lipitor (atorvastatin)
- Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)
- Theophylline;
- A diuretic or "water pill"
- Heart rhythm medication
- Insulin or oral diabetes medicine
- Medicine to treat depression or mental illness
- Steroid medicine (such as prednisone)
- Over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products
- Blood thinners such as Warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven
- NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), aspirin, naproxen (Aleve), diclofenac, indomethacin, celecoxib, meloxicam, and others
- Antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium such as Mylanta, Maalox or Rolaids
- Vitamin or mineral supplements that contain aluminum, iron, magnesium, or zinc
PRECAUTION:
Do not use this medicine, if you are allergic to it or if you have a history of any other allergies.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or health care provider about your medical history, especially of:
- Diabetes
- Kidney problems
- Heart problems
- Joint, tendon, arthritis or other bone problems
- Seizure disorder
- Long QT syndrome
- A head injury or brain tumor
- High blood pressure
- Mental or mood disorders such as depression
- Low levels of potassium in the blood
- A certain muscle condition such as myasthenia gravis
- Nerve problems such as peripheral neuropathy
- Blood vessel problems such as blockage of blood vessels or hardening of the arteries
- Certain genetic conditions (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Marfan syndrome)
It is not recommended to give this Levaquin medication to a child without medical advice.
It is not clear whether Levaquin will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant.
This medicine may pass into breast milk. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding.
OVERDOSE:
Levaquin overdose symptoms observed in animals include:
- Tremors
- Convulsions
- Dizziness
- Loss of body control and drooping
- Difficulty breathing
Seek emergency medical help or see your doctor immediately in case of over dosage.
