Let it snow! Severe weather warnings abound after weekend of wintry weather

Could snow be on the way for Britain?

Finally – following the second warmest November on record, Britain is finally getting a bit chilly.

So chilly, in fact, that after a weekend of wintry weather, the Met Office has issued severe weather warnings: More snow, sleet and hail will fall Monday in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Northern England, with icy conditions and strong winds expected towards the end of the week. Western Scotland will be most affected by snow with several centimetres expected to fall.

Snow is on the minds, lips and fingertips of Britons this week: The Telegraph and The BBC have complied a slideshows of images of the snowfall across the country, while Twitter is working up a snow-storm (sorry), with Tweeters alternately hoping for more of the white stuff and complaining that what’s already fallen is barely worth the worry.

“I shall blow the jolly snowing clouds towards England and make it snow,” promises @Stegolylosaurus

Accidents. Sky News is reporting on disruption to motorists by the sleet and snow, urging drivers to take extra care – already, a lorry driver died after his vehicle left a trunk road in north Lincolnshire. Snowy and icy conditions in Highlands, Lanarkshire, Central Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway and Aberdeenshire had roads closed and local airports were reporting delays and cancellations. Meanwhile, gritting trucks, 130 of them, are busily spreading 3,000 tonnes of salt worked overnight to minimise icy conditions.

A storm on Twitter. #uksnow is now trending on Twitter, providing a narrative of both jubilant and disgruntled tweeters across the country. “This isn’t snow, it’s a wintery mix! Come on England, try harder,” complained one tweeter. Follow @UKSnowUpdates for updates on when and where snow is predicted.

A white Christmas? Of course, the biggest question on everyone’s minds is whether the UK will see snow on Christmas. According to The Daily Mail, the answer is maybe: It looks like the northern part of the country could see more “unsettled” weather, while the southern part will just see rain.
