For the most part, we have chickens who do not like the snow. As late as last week, before the storms came, the entire flock was still in our yard pulling up the last of the grasses and searching for any leftover autumn seeds. But this week, even with an opened coop door, instead of roaming, the girls prefer to hunker down in the coop, ducking heads under their wings and bracing against the bitter winds.
Now is the time to stay indoors and commiserate with others about the weather.
But I’ve discovered that we have one courageous flock member who is braving the snow and not taking the winter lying down (or on roost.) Despite the cold, despite the ice and snow, one of our hens is clearly not intimidated by winter and she’s going outside and getting some exercise.
In a season when it’s easier to stay inside and forgo invitations because it’s too much trouble to bundle up, and when it seems logical to put off any exercise because it’s so darn cold outside, we would do well to remember the example of this little chicken, who despite the cold and winds, still manages to get herself out into the world in order to enjoy the day.
