When chicks are newborns, they need to be taught where the water and food is. In our house, we do this by using red marbles in their dishes for the first few weeks. Like a mosquito to naked skin, the chicks quickly zero in on the target.
Chicks love the color red.
When our chicks get older, we switch them to different, larger feeders, but we still use the ones that have red in the base as a way to let them know that “here it is girls, come and get it.”
When our chicks get still older, the love of red does not go away, which is why, as much as I love these patriotic earrings, I can’t wear them near the chicken coop. Not if I want to keep my earlobes.
And when chicks get even older – well, let’s just say that some things never change.
