Creativity takes courage.

Henry Matisse

This is the weekend.

I’ve been working on a manuscript about our lessons learned from the flock and it’s close to being finished. I’ve got a solid, edited and commented-on draft. The problem is that I never seem to find the quiet time to really sit down and focus in order to transform that draft into its final form. Kids and paying writing jobs always come first – they have to.

A final draft means you need to hear the words in your head from beginning to end. You can’t begin the final edit and then stop to answer “what’s for dinner?”

You can’t stop a final edit to go pick up a kid who missed the bus, who needs some school supplies RIGHT NOW, or who can’t find her soccer shirt (it’s in the dryer.)

In exchange for a house-sitting gig, I get to have a quiet, uninterrupted 3 days (three! Count them) where I will be by myself with my writing. I will finally be able to hear that little writer’s voice of mine loud and clear, all weekend.

My goal is to be finished with the draft by Monday and with an opportunity like this, you can safely bet I will be. If there is one thing I’ve discovered I do well, it’s working under pressure.

Through the support of my family, I’m ready to disappear to do what it is I need to do, because this mama hen has a story or two to tell.

Be safe and see you all next week.
