Learn Which Ingredients You Should Avoid in the Beauty Products

In the last 10 year we as consumers have come a long way. Some of us now know that it is our right to know what exactly goes into our food and cosmetics that we use daily. But unfortunately, most people are not aware at all what ingredients certain products contain and they believe that just because some official organization has approved it, the products are perfectly safe. I used to believe that too, but then one day I realized that all the beauty products I bought in pharmacies never really helped my condition so I began wondering why. I slowly started to understand the truth behind the beauty industry and why it is important to learn more about ingredients contained in each product we buy.

I always recommend going for green, organic and certified products, but whatever you choose to apply to your skin, here are just some of the most common and controversial ingredients you should avoid if you can.

1. Paraffin (mineral oil, parrafinum liquidum, paraffin petrolatum). This is a petroleum derivative, it’s an environmental toxin, it clogs your pores and can’t be absorbed by your skin. Found also in baby products like the famous Johnson’s Oil.

2. Parabens (propylparaben, methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben). Chemicals used as preservatives by cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. They can be absorbed through the skin, blood and digestive system causing irritation, dermatitis, rosacea and they are also linked allegedly to breast cancer and early puberty in girls.

3. Aluminium (aluminium chloride, aluminium hydrochloride, aluminium oxide). Human neurotoxicant, causes eye, skin and lungs irritation. Linked to Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer.

4. Acrylate polymer. Synthetic polymer used as a film former in cosmetics. Skin irritation.

5. Silicones (dimethicone, methicone). Clogs the pores and irritates the skin.

These are all possible side effects. Some say it’s true, others say it’s safe (mostly scientists paid by pharmaceutical companies). However they are harsh chemicals and therefor best to be avoid. There are so many beautiful natural ingredients we can use. We’ll talk about them in future blog posts.
