I walk on the rue de Rosiers almost daily among the hustle and bustle of the falafel shops and Jewish Deli’s, which have become a huge tourist magnet. I noticed the other day a sign attached to a green gate, Le Jardin des Rosiers – Joseph-Mignere in the thick of the hungry tourists patiently waiting on line to try the legendary falafel sandwiches.
Inside the gate was a newly planted series of gardens bordered by some hotel-particuliers from the 1600s, including Hôtel de Coulanges, Hôtel Barbes and Hôtel d’Albret. There is also a rebuilt tower from the 77 originally built by King Philippe Auguste in 1190.
The garden is named after Joseph-Mignere, the principal of the nearby elementary school Hospitallers-Saint-Gervais, who was in The Resistance in WW II and helped save the lives of many Jewish children.
A quiet respite from the cacophony of the rue des Rosiers, people were relaxing and picnicking, parents were playing and chasing their children and seniors were siting on benches appreciating their surroundings.
There are two entries, one at 10 rue de Rosiers, the other in the courtyard of Maison de l'Europe, at 35-37 rue des Francs-Bourgeois.
