Laura Smith had just run a half-marathon (13.1 miles) in a nearby town in Colorado. To relieve her soreness she decided to treat herself to a massage at the Natural Healing Center in Aurora, Colorado. All Smith wanted to do was relax. What she didn’t expect was to be told she couldn’t get a massage because she was “too fat” and “could break the table.”
Smith was flabbergasted by the owner’s matter-of-fact tone in her assertion. The owner said:
“I’m really sorry, but you’re just too fat for our table. You’ll probably break it and have to pay for it.”
Smith was completely caught off-guard. She has a relatively athletic build and is about 6’3” tall. She had recently lost 50 lbs. and weighed about 250 lbs. Smith took her stuff and cried herself back home. The owner later told a local news station that a 165 lb. man had recently broken a table and that she used that example as a precedent.
The owner also came to find out that the table is supposed to hold a maximum of 500 lbs.
I find it completely ridiculous that this owner would reject this customer. She humiliated Smith. I’m sorry but if your tables break after a 165 lb. man lies on them then you should seriously consider getting other tables!
What do you think?
