In 1986, as the maiden issue of The Independent went to press, a wreath of condolence arrived at the City Road offices of the new, upstart broadsheet. It was from the staff at The Times in anticipation of The Independent's imminent demise.
The staff took the wreath and placed it on Blake's grave in nearby Bunhill Fields…

Today marked the last appearance on UK newsstands of The Independent – from now on The Independent will be digital only. 
Murdoch's Times was only out by 30 years in its prediction. 
One thought: The Indy arrived on the scene just as Fleet Street as the home of newspaper publishing had already began to fade. I wonder how long Fleet Street will persist as a metonym for the business of making newspapers?
