Verdict on Last Night on Earth
Recap
The movie follows a couple who look to spend their last day together on the Earth as a planet-killing comet heads to Earth. It is filled with challenges and shows the changes the world saw when people knew the end was coming.
Best Parts
We have seen plenty of end-of-the-world movies over the years. Not many bring the reality that is it actually ending without wild attempts to stop it. Here, we get the more human side of knowing the end is coming and trying to make the most of that time together. It shines through the story, which hits hard when it needs to. We get moments of despair and seeing how other people react to the end is also important. The key thing to know is we don’t see the wild scientific ideas to stop it, we follow people who have accepted the fate when everyone knows there is no chance.
Worst Parts
We learn of a big time frame between the comet’s discovery and the final day. It is implied the world fell apart, but it also doesn’t feel like that happened. In my head, I can see the reactions in Deep Impact, but the characters seem to have not gone through anything bad before this final day.
Final Thoughts – Last Night on Earth hits hard on the reality of the end of the world.
