Here's a silly and pointless story from the news yesterday, though the incident itself had happened a month ago...
MK Yair Lapid was driving to Jerusalem on Highway 443 when he stopped at Tzomet Shilat to give a ride to an avreich who was hitchhiking. After the avreich gets into the car, he begins learning from his gemara. Lapid, the driver, asks what he is learning. the Avreich responds saying Bava Metzia. Lapid says,"nice. I also learned Bava Metzia. Rav Shai Piron taight me... have you heard of him?". The avreich responded that he had not heard of him.
As they enter Jerusalem, the driver, Lapid, asks the passenger what his final destination is. The avreich says anywhere is fine, he'll get off wherever the driver is going and then make his own way. Lapid said, ok, and let him know that he is a Member of Knesset and is going to the Knesset.
The avreich asked the driver who he is, surely surprising Lapid. Lapid said he is Yair Lapid, and the avreich had not heard of him either.
According to Kooker, Lapid has confirmed the veracity of the story.
Yair Lapid got lucky and found the one Haredi in the country that doesn't hate him - doesn't even know who he is...
It is almost difficult to believe this story. Lapid and Piron were so vilified and turned into the haredi's worst enemy, even the most studious yeshiva students and avreichim considered him their worst enemy. If this fellow really did not know who Lapid and Piron are and never heard of them, he must have ben a super studious bookworm avreich really staying entirely away from politics and news and even just average chitter chatter in downtime.
