Like Kubernetes and native cloud technologies proliferate, developers and IT have found a growing array of technical challenges they face, and new concepts and plans have arisen to address them. For example, operators provide a way to package, deploy and manage the native cloud application in an automated way. Kubermatic wants to pursue this concept and today the German startup has announced KubeCarrier, a new hub for managing open source and cloud native services.
Kubermatic co-founder Sebastian Scheele says that three or four years ago, the native cloud community had to solve a number of technical problems related to deploying Kubernetes clusters such as overlapping networks, service meshes and authentication. He sees a number of similar problems today where developers need more tools to manage the growing complexity of managing large-scale Kubernetes clusters.
Kubermatic developed KubeCarrier to help solve one aspect of this. "We are currently focusing on how to provision and manage workloads across multiple clusters and how IT organizations can have a service hub where they can provide these services to their organizations centrally," explained Scheele.
Scheele says that KubeCarrier provides a way to manage and implement this, giving organizations much more flexibility than just managing Kubernetes. While seeing organizations with many Kubernetes operators, he says that as he sees it, it doesn't stop there. "Now we have a lot of Kubernetes operators, but how we manage them, especially when there are multiple operators, [along with] the services they are providing, "he asked.
This could involve provisioning something like Database as a Service within the organization or for external customers, by combining or providing multiple services, which work on multiple levels and need a way to communicate with each other.
"This is where Kubecarrier comes in. Now we can help our customers build this type of automation around provisioning and service capabilities so that different teams can provide different services within the organization or external customers," he has declared.
As the company explains, "KubeCarrier addresses these complexities by leveraging Kubernetes' API and operators in a central framework that allows businesses and service providers to provide native cloud service management from a multi-cloud and multi- cluster ".
KubeCarrier is available on GitHub and Scheele says the company hopes to get feedback from the community on how to improve it. In parallel, the company is looking for ways to integrate this technology into its commercial offerings and which is expected to be available in the next 3-6 months, he said.
