As part of a cooperation with Solana Labs, video game developer Krafton said on Wednesday that non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will be included in the popular battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) (PUBG).

based in the Republic of Korea Among Krafton’s goals for the Solana Labs cooperation, according to a press release, are the “development and operation of blockchain and NFT-based games and services.”
According to a source acquainted with the deal, the partnership is in the form of a memorandum of understanding, which means Krafton has the option to terminate it at any time without facing legal consequences.

One of the most popular Steam games of all time, PUBG has millions of active players; as recently as early 2022, it was estimated that as many as 696,000 active players were playing at the same time. In terms of popularity in the battle royale genre, the game is only second to Epic Games’ Fortnite, which was released in 2017.

While working to expand the Web 3 ecosystem, Krafton will continue to explore chances to partner closely with blockchain companies such as Solana Labs, according to HyungChul Park, head of Krafton’s Web 3 division, in a press release. “Solana represents the pinnacle of the Web 3.0 ecosystem and technology, and Krafton will benefit from this cooperation by gaining the expertise it needs to accelerate its investment in and development of blockchain-based experiences.”

The announcement comes at a time when attitudes regarding NFT adoption in the traditional gaming business are still negative, as a result of earlier episodes of resistance to the technology.

Krafton invested $6.6 million in two Korean NFT companies in February to assist the company to grow its Web 3 activities.
